Atheists for Odin? : Why the Northern tradition has an appeal to many of the godless.

Posted: August 14, 2016 in Uncategorized

Why do I support the Asatru Community? Aren’t I an Atheist?

Yes, I am an atheist. Atheism is a conclusion, after not seeing testable evidence for a single universal creator. I believe that there are no gods, because there is no evidence of any gods. However, Atheism is only the Gateway to Reality. Once you walk through that Gateway, towards that rise to reason, you should put aside atheism.

What do I meanput aside atheism“?

Well, you can’t live your life as an atheist! I mean, do you go shopping as an atheist? {Look! Theres a godless banana*, I’ll shall have to purchase that!). Are you constantly shouting out “Down with god!”? Do you meet up with people to celebrate the nothingess of the gods? {Oh, great nothingness, thank you for my life as a evolutionist Dawkinite!)

I dont.

Atheist is often used as a shorthand for a person of a

(1)-liberal, feminist, centre left, pro-GLBT rights, pro-abortion, godless humanistic stance. This is not strictly true. There are atheists who are

(2)-alt-right, conservative, anti-feminist and not in favour of abortion. Then there are atheists who can be

(3)- Nihilistic in their thoughts and who live a very hedonistic lifestyle.

The point is, once you are an atheist, you can move on into reality to decide How you want to live your life.

Many decide to become a person who has the outlook of (1) or of (2) or of (3) and then there are many more who embark on a journey of non-theistic discovery. Many newly godless are angry at the lies of religion, yet the rituals within the tradition they have come from, give a grounding and a meaning to their lives. Many ex-christians and exmuslims want a philosophical foundation for themselves and their new lifestyles. Many do not want to start from scratch or cobble together some belief system, that they may not feel they can stick to!

They may do it for a while, yet they may say “Ah, well I’ll leave it today!” and they may not be so committed. Others, if course, may have found their right path.

Then there are others who have a draw to an existing system. They want some certainty. Imagine that you have realized that the christian religion you have been following all your life is based on lies. You’d not want to follow many of its practices and codes of conduct again. You’d want something slightly better, but you are now an atheist. There are no practices and codes of conduct within a religion of atheism, because there is no religion of atheism!

2 questions come to your mind:

What do you stand for now?

How do you structure your life?

Most move to secular humanism and some attend Sunday Assemblies. This is a humanist gathering for community interaction. Secular songs are sung and advances in scientific discovery are cheered. You can hold your head up and say “I’m a nonbeliever”. It is far removed from religion which tells you that you are a sinner and must throw yourself upon the Creators mercy!

I only had a light dusting of school based Christianity as I grew up. I had agnostic parents, so there was no programming for me! My mind was not enslaved. I may have been mentally free, though there was times I looked in a church gatherings and was slightly envious that they had each other. Christianity may be a slave mentality, yet you are part of a community of slaves! Even while bowing your head and living in fear of judgement from a loving god that would send you to an infinite place of torture for a finite “sin” you have people, fellow worshippers, around you.

How can that hole, when leaving religion, be filled

That mentality where you are the slave and God the master and of fear of Hell and the hope of heaven…you obviously want to distance yourself from that mess, yet you may want friends.(No (hu)man is an island!”)

When that angry phase towards religion has disapaited, you may no longer want to challenge it as directly as you once did. It’s now time to move past the negative feelings. You accept that you must live alongside it, as you are secularist. You want to meet other secularists. Being with believers may now be difficult. You are firmly of the opinion “They believe what they want, but don’t impose it upon me!” and you are now faced with a few decisions.

Do you live your life without rituals? Do you really want to create some calendar that involves the veneration of Dawkins, Hitchens, Newton and Tesla? Most will go along with the flow (in christian majority countries) of celebrating christian traditions, just not saying god or Christ when they come up. Is this fulfilling? Are you an integrated goy in the Judeo-Christian culture and if not, where do you go?

You want something modern. You want something with a community. You want something that allows you to develop again. You also want to mark the passing of time, as all humans do. These occur in many traditions throughout the year. So many questions is the reason many stay within religion. The uncertainty of being not being welcomed or being alone.

You desire some foundation. This can be met with Asatruism. (Asatru Folk Assembly is a newer movement that The Ring of Troth inspired)

Why Asatruism

A foundation can be met by the philosophical traditions behind religion. To follow the guidelines of many traditions would seem to be a bit of a pick-n’-mix, but appropriation has been going on for centuries. Christianity stole Christmas/Yule from the Pagans dontcha know?

As mentioned above, they may be of a liberal and humanist or a conservative and humanist viewpoint and want live their lives accordingly. They may go to Sunday assemblies or join non-political humanist groups, but they may also join or believe in other values.

Asatru can be seen as a philosophy of living, just like buddhism. Asatru gives you a shape to your life, a good structure and you don‘t have to see the gods within Asatru as real, but as Symbolic. Many in the Church of Satan also approach it this way.

You would become a Pagan Atheist

Now, I know there are Asatruists who do ‘see’, have faith in and speak of Odin as real and that Loki genuinely wants to spoil your life, but many asatruists understand and admit freely that Modern Asatruism is a reconstructionist movement. Due to the near destruction, by Christians, of pagan places of worship and destruction of the sparse writings, no one can truly say what or how the ancient tradition was practised.

Asatru has roots in the past, but their codes are very modern. It’s a tough subject to mention, but even the brief (1919-1945) racist, Nazi appropriation of this code has been tackled.  Modern Asatruists very strongly condemn the Nazi period of history. There is a Heathens without Hate movement within Asatruism that self-polices itself and they challenge all those who wish to bring that sickness in with them.

In many peoples opinion, Asatruism is more rationally based then any of the Abrahamic religions. Woman are equal in Asatru. Catholic nuns could never be a Father or Pope. Women in Asatru are valued as men are valued. Equally. Though many Asatruists are Traditionalists.

Can a noneuropean person or a homosexual person follow the code of asatru?

Have you not read the Sagas? The Gods of the Aseir and Vanir changed shape and colour all of the time!

An Odinist\asatro temple has been built by a Odinist practioner, Jim Lyngvild. He is openly gay. He is a Danish designer, who designed his very own temple(The Valheim Hof) and has given much to the community of Scandinavian polytheism.

So, I believe anyone can join or use the teachings as a philosophy in their lives.(They must accept western values to join. Tolerance, acceptance of woman’s rights etc and free speech)
Asatru has also received a huge boost in attention from TV shows and Video Games such as Vikings, Game of Thrones, The Last Kingdom and Oblivion and Skyrim.

The Valheim Hof in Korinth, Denmark. The first such building built in Denmark since the time of the Middle Ages. It is based upon the excavation of the 7th century Uppåka Temple, Sweden. This Temple building has been built and re-built since the 3rd Century. It is older than European Christianity in that region. It honours Odin and the old gods.

We all live by codes and by the flow of the seasons. Asatruists live by the 9 noble virtues and attend rituals that mark the calendar.(see link above) It harks back to the religions of Scandinavia, Germany and of Northern Britain and Ireland.

To live your life by another countries philosophy is strange, isn’t it? Not really. There are millions of Buddhist atheists. They are atheists who do not believe in the Buddhist theology, nor live in India, Tibet or Japan, yet live by what Buddha taught.

To live your life by an Odin-inspired set of thinking is just the same.

Follow Odin.

Does that mean there are Atheists for Jesus or Atheists who live their lives based upon the Sermon on the Mount?

Yes, they strip out the theological elements, ignore the obvious god belief and follow the values of non violence, tolerance etc.

Isnt that just humanism with a guru or guide to follow

Yes it is, but Humanism should be seen as a spectrum. Along that spectrum is Asatru.

Arent you just exchanging one religion for another

No, as stated above, the gods are symbolic and the rituals are reconstructed and not binding. Its more a veneration than worship. You can still ask “You believe Thor exists, show me the evidence!”

Heathen Brand designs @

I also support Asatru, because it has proved that the Abrahamic religion of Christianity, (which basically was the “ISIS of Scandinavia”)couldn’t suppress the urge to honour The Old Gods and the desire to find a lifestyle freed from the trappings of Christ. That is a good thing. I actually favour a plethora of thought.

Even though atheist, I’m not for the total suppression of religion, just would like to see the end of irrational thought, which is brought into political life by the religious. I don’t mind that Asatru temples have been (re)built in Iceland and Denmark.

Are asatruists against Christianity?

Yes and no. Yes where Asatruists are against the abrahamic world view of Original Sin. Christianity ruined thousands of settlements and uncounted thousands of lives, dividing families and whole communities. It then had the affront to steal pagan practices to ingratiate itself into the Northern European mind. This is why Easter moves around- it’s a pagan moon festival of spring and why we have Christmas trees, even though the bible expressly forbids the hanging of trimmings upon trees. Christianity is another Middle Eastern Import. It was brought out of the desert by Greeks, transfered to western Europe by the Romans and enforced by tyrants, kings and the Catholic church. No, where it involves hatred against the believer! Any atheist who follows the practices of Asatru (still keeping a wary eye on any mention of gods) is helping secularism.

Asatru was forbidden. Now it is on the rise.

Are there any tensions between faithbased Asatruists and Pagan Atheists?

No, I’d say it’s the reverse. There is a natural alliance. However I do get some banter thrown my way! A person sent me this picture saying I was so interested in Asatru that I should marry it!

Being sent this was funny.

Funny memes are also a way to connect with each other.

If you follow Asatru, listening to Eivor, Fever Ray, Wardruna (who are good), Black metal, Viking Metal or Burzum isn’t compulsory!

On the subject of the Ethno-nationalist Asatruism or Racist Odinist

Very rarely, you do meet a racist asatruist who will have a love of all things Hitlerian. The best way to deal with them is to ignore and move on.

I also think Pagan Atheists and Asatruists have very good reason to criticise Judeo-Christian and Islamic traditions. They have a commonality of purpose here.

Our common bond.

I hope that atheists and asatruists do get along. Many Christian fundamentalists and Islamists would not tolerate Asatruists or atheists, in their communities. We desperately need more secular communities, with a common agrarian based calendar, and I believe that there are many in Europe still want those communities. They want tradition, desire to have seasonal rituals that do not alienate others, yet they also want it to be based upon rationalism. Christianity and Islam has failed the last test. They are not inclusive, they are not rational. The harvest festival pre dates Christianity. Yule predates christianity. I would not feel included in a Christian festival, that has a large crucifix of a suffering man above my head as I eat my Turkey and celebrate life. I would not feel included in a Muslim celebration as women in a black all covering shroud walk around me!

Paganism can be rationalism with rituals that are grounded in a long tradition. There are no crucified men with a crown of thorns around & you can see the face of the waitress serving your ale! I want good wholesome and free festivals. I want to celebrate the seasons, not have them tainted by Judeo-Christian guilt!

It should be celebrated that the monopoly of Judeo-Christian-based culture is at an end, as it gives a chance to those who see the future in the past. Not often mentioned is the change brought about by immigration. Immigration is good, yet can bring challenges if the incoming culture has a different creed. Without the binding links of a failed religion, members of the host nation, can feel isolated and nameless as a community.

I believe a new Paganism will end that isolation and lack of identity. Asatruism and the pagan atheists within it are rising to replace Islam and Christianity. These 2 Abrahamic religions have created much, yet have destroyed so much more.

so Hail Odin!

…….even if he isnt real!

* bananas have two things that atheists like;

1- they made a complete fools out of Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron, when he famously tried to prove Intelligent Design by holding the fruit and explaining how amazing it was made that way to be easy to peel and eat.

What he actually proved is that he’s a delusional idiot! Wild bananas have been cultivated to create our modern bananas and they don’t look intelligently designed at all!

2- Humans share 50% of our genes with bananas.

3- All picture credits remain with the originator.(even when unknown.)

  1. Torekka says:

The form Asatru takes in the modern times is “inclusive,” but it isn’t any more inclusive than Judaism or Shinto, it’s still an Ethno-religion. If you want “Inclusion,” then pick some funny Abrahamic religion and force everyone to follow it, bingo! An all encompassing world religion for an all inclusive world order!
