How can i convince you?

Seriously, how can I convince you to give up your religion?

Well, I don’t think I can, but I hope I can start an internal dialogue with yourself.

Here it is:

Where to start? Such a big subject.

Er…

You may ask me “You say you are an atheist. So you don’t believe that God exists?” and to that I’ll say “Which god? There are at least 4,000 known gods. All of them had followers, who had the same amount of faith as you have in your god and they sincerely believed that their god was the True god, just as you do”

Here’s an idea for you.

Go to http://www.godchecker.com and pick a god or goddess out, even ones that you have never heard of, then write down several reasons why you do not believe in that god or have any faith in that god.

Here are some;

1-that god did wicked deeds.

2-that god inspired horrible laws

3-that god inflicted horrible deaths upon innocent victims.

4-that god is based on a bad understanding of how the world works. E.g.- thunder is not the sound of a god farting

5-that god is a foreign god and probably a tribal god of war.

Now apply these reasons to your god.

Here’s another couple of questions;

“Why do you believe in god?”

Is it because of parental indoctrination? No, or you don’t see years of being told a lie AS indoctrination. I think that’s what it is. You are told something without contrast, without criticism at an early age, so you had to reason to question it. Children’s brains are like sponges. They need to be, so that information learned by the parents can be passed on to make the child successful. Social cohesion is necessary for a tribe to coexist with itself. A tribe that thinks the same can be more effective. Religion, a common core of ideas, plays this role. Daniel Dennett points this way.
Is it because you have had an experience? Muhammad probably had late-onset epilepsy… His experiences, if he was already tilting towards spirituality, would confirm in his own mind that he was special. Even though he said he was illiterate, he probably had absorbed a great deal of biblical knowledge from fellow travellers. He must applied those stories to frame his own. Nothing special at all.
